Crew 2’s Jacen Russell-Rowe earns MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Month honors for May

For the first time in the history of Columbus Crew 2, the Black & Gold have a player named Player of the Month. On Tuesday, MLS Next Pro announced various awards, including naming Jacen Russell-Rowe the league's Player of the Month for May.

MLS Next Pro awards are determined by votes from the league's editorial team, league personnel, announcers and the clubs themselves. Like in MLS, these awards take into account all players who qualify for the honor.

As is the common phrase, all good things must come to an end. That is what happened Sunday afternoon to Columbus Crew 2. The Black & Gold reserve team lost 4-0 loss to Rochester New York FC at Historic Crew Stadium, snapping a seven-game winning streak that dates back to the opening contest of the MLS NEXT Pro season.

Crew 2 brings the storm back to Columbus with 4-2 vs. Toronto FC II

Columbus Crew 2 had to wait an additional 17 hours before being able to kick off the team’s first, and only, scheduled game at Lower.com Field. Following multiple weather delays for the first team on Saturday, Crew 2’s contest, which was supposed to be part of an exciting double header for Black & Gold fans, was pushed until Sunday.

But once the match did, Columbus did not disappoint. Crew 2 brought a second storm through Columbus Sunday afternoon, defeating Toronto FC II 4-2.

After a long, grueling preseason, Columbus Crew 2, playing in the new MLS NEXT Pro league got the team’s first taste of competitive action. The Columbus Crew made a slew of new signings throughout the offseason. Columbus Cruises To Victory Over Vancouver In The Season Opener

It is not very often that a team comfortably wins in Major League Soccer. But, Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio was one of those matches. The game was all Black and Gold from the opening whistle, and the Crew never looked back. Columbus had 56% of the possession, but it felt like they had the ball much more than that. Columbus outshot Vancouver 22-7 on shots, including 7-0 shots on goal. It felt like Vancouver rarely had the ball, and it was just a complete performance from the Crew.
